Vera Ellen — Telegram 2

Sometimes, just like you, I lie awake at night asking myself the hard questions. The latest quandary keeping me from sleeping is, “Who the heck would win in a three-way street fight between The Velvet Underground, Courtney Barnett, and Pavement?”...     The answer of course is: none of them, because the street fight is no longer necessary. Vera Ellen has bottled the fun of all three, adding a few extra secret herbs and spices to create what I believe is the ULTIMATE SONG. That’s right, Telegram 2 from Vera’s new album It’s Your Birthday is a 100% purely radical JAM.   The whole record is a total blast, with tons of the singles already getting to stretch their legs on 95bFM, but it’s this tune that keeps me coming back like an oversized Oliver Twist, holding out my bowl for another steaming hot helping of Telegram 2.     Side note, I think we should be stoked that Hariet “Plays In Every Great Band In Aotearoa” Ellis is managing Flying Nun Records into a whole new era, with new signings like this one proving she’s got a nose for the good stuff! Review by Matthew ‘Crawdaddy’ Crawley
